Previously from denouncement letters of local residents, Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper reporters investigated public land use problems in the island. The story on the land corruption in the island was published on issues on July 18-20, 2018, referring to Mr. Vo Thai Hoa who was a former official in charge of natural resources and environment in the island district.
According to verification of the Inspection Commission, Mr. Vo Thai Hoa has up to 15 land plots and some giant properties including So Ray pleasure house complex, Thai Binh hotel, Ben Dam ice factory and an area of rental pleasure house to serve foreigners.
Of these, he wrongly enumerated three land plots showing signs of abusing position and power while being on duty to regularize these properties to be his private ownership. The Inspection Commission has proposed to reclaim the three land plots locating in residential area no.3, Huynh Thuc Khang street.
When being in office as acting head of the island Office of Natural Resources and Environment in 2016, Hoa showed signs of self-seeking while solving documents to recognize his wife Tran Thi Yen’s use right to the land plot measuring 1,142 square meters belonging to state ownership. The land plot locates in Nguyen Duc Thuan street, residential area no. 5 where an illegal construction work has been built over the total area of 643 square meters.
Despite these serious violations, he has only been impposed a punishment under the kind of “learning from the mistakes” and moved to other position.
