Nguyen Van Nguong was caught red-handed while he was transporting 1,400 foreign cigarette packets in Xuan Thoi Thuong Commune at noon yesterday.

The 37-year-old man claimed he was hired by Nguyen Van Tien, 41, who resided in the same commune, to transport the tobacco from a warehouse in the commune to an alley in Truong Chinh Street of Tan Binh District.

Police officials searched the warehouse, seized 11,190 foreign tobacco packs and took Tien into custody.

According to an initial investigation, Nguong and Tien are part of a foreign tobacco trafficking ring.

The cigarette packets were illegally imported from Cambodia to Duc Hoa District in Long An Province to be stored in a warehouse in Hoc Mon District. The entire consignment was meant for consumption in the city.
