Police of Chuong My district in Hanoi remanded a security guard to custody for three months for killing a worker at a Taiwanese-owned factory that manufactured motorbike parts.
Hundreds of laborers gathered in front of Giai Duc Vietnam Company in Phu Nghia Industrial Park in Chuong My district to demand higher salaries and stopped a truck carrying material into the compound on June 23.
Guard Le Tuan Minh, an employee of the Northern Security Company, asked the driver of the truck to get off and drove the truck straight into the crowd of striking employees, killing Nguyen Thi Lieu and injuring six other workers.
The injured being treated in Chuong My Hospital are Nguyen Thu Hue, Nguyen Thi Loan, Nguyen Thi Huong, Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Nguyen Thi Thuy and Nguyen Thi Lan. Nguyen Thu Hue is seven months pregnant.
Some media reports say that Minh had confessed to receiving orders from his bosses to drive into the crowd. He said that Dinh Thi Ai, head of the company’s Organization and Administration Department had ordered him to take the van into the premises “at any cost”. That is why he drove the van himself although he did not have a driver’s license.
The police have collected testimonies from several witnesses and are continuing investigation.
| Leaders of Giai Duc Vietnam Company agreed to raise the basic salary of workers to VND1, 680,000 per month along with a lunch allowance of VND15, 000, a diligence fee of VND100, 000, housing cost up to VND200, 000 and transportation cost to VND200, 000. The Taiwanese company compensated VND25 million (US$1,190) to Nguyen Thi Lieu’s relatives, VND10million to the seriously injured workers, VND7 million to the pregnant woman worker and VND5 million to other injured workers. |
