8,000 cases of tobacco smuggling handled in first seven months

Staffs of the Department of Market Management handled nearly 8,000 cases in the first seven months, said participants of a meeting to review anti-smuggling of Tobacco.

The meeting was held in the Central City of Da Nang on August 28 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Department of Market Management.

Market managers fined 4,712 cases with total of VND14 billion (US$ 658,128) and seized over one million packages of tobacco, eight cars, 432 motorbikes and seven boats which were used for transporting tobacco through border gates. 21 cases have been prosecuted.

Deputy head of the Department of Market Mângement Nguyen Trong Tin said that smuggled tobacco was mainly transported via border gates in the central province of Quang Tri, the southern provinces of Tay Ninh, Long An, Dong Thap, An Giang, and Kien Giang and later it was brought to Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces for consumption.
