He said the Party, State and people were pleased with the solid growth of the country's arts, with Vietnamese artists contributing more and more excellent works.

He said during the difficult time of the wars for independence, literature and arts had made great contributions to the final victory of the whole nation.

"Today, in the cause of building and protecting the country, writers and artists have continued to make important contributions and have brought into full play the strength of the whole nation to enhance Vietnamese society during the new period," he said.

The President urged young Vietnamese writers and artists to take on their predecessors' motivation to create more works of value for the people.

This year, the Council of State Awards gave State Award prizes to 128 works and groups of works, while the Meritorious Artist title was given to 356 workers in the field.

Last week, the council gave the Ho Chi Minh Prizes - the highest of its kind - to 12 works and groups of works and People's Artists titles to 74 artists
