Cambodian press highlights Vietnamese top leader’s visit

Major newspapers of Cambodia, including the Phnom Penh Post, Khmer Times and Thmey Thmey have run a series of stories on the State visit to Cambodia of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Nguyen Phu Trong on February 25-26.

The Phnom Penh Post quoted a statement by Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as saying that during the two-day visit at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni, the Vietnamese leader will hold talks with the King and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.

He will meet with Tep Vong, the Great Supreme Patriarch of Cambodia, and Bour Kry, the Supreme Patriarch of the Thammayut order of Cambodia.

The Vietnamese leader is also to meet Senate President Say Chhum, President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin, and Prime Minister Hun Sen in a ceremony to mark the signing of documents, the ministry said.

The paper also mentioned Cambodia’s government spokesman Phay Siphan’s remarks that the visit would be beneficial to Cambodia-Vietnam cooperation, especially in the maintenance of stability along the border shared by the two countries, with its full demarcation to be completed soon. He added this would be a significant achievement.

“It will be a positive development, and we have maintained cooperation between the countries and peace along the border,” he said.

Phay Siphan also stressed that the Cambodian people cannot forget that Vietnamese voluntary soldiers had fought side by side with the Kampuchean United Front for  National Salvation led by Hun Sen and Heng Samrin to liberate Cambodia from the genocidal regime.

Kin Phea, director general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia’s International Relations Institute, said Cambodia and Vietnam enjoy a healthy relationship and strengthening ties is crucial in terms of politics, security and trade.

Meanwhile, the Khmer Times highlighted the Cambodia visit of Party General Secretary Trong in July 2017 when he and Prime Minister Hun Sen witnessed the signing of five important documents designed to strengthen bilateral partnership in mitigating natural disaster impacts, building power system and enhancing cooperation between telecommunications ministries of the two countries.
