Vietnam jubilant on win by national squad!

Cheering football fans filled the streets of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to celebrate their win by the national squad who achieved a place in the semi-finals of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, on December 8.

Ho Chi Minh City was vibrant with colour.

As the results of the game between Vietnam and Singapore were announced, thousands of Vietnamese rushed to Ho Chi Minh City’s downtown area to celebrate. The main downtown area was covered with flags and banners as football fans cheered and celebrated their win.

Ben Thanh market was a sea of fans and motorbikes. They drove through the major streets of Ho Chi Minh City crying their joy and waving flags.  Nguyen Hue, Le Loi, Nguyen Van Cu, Ly Thai To and Nguyen Trai streets saw jubilant crowds and much celebration. The national team’s victory was surely a reason to celebrate.

Hundreds of foreign tourists were surprised to see the joyous atmosphere on Dong Khoi and Pham Ngu Lao streets. Streets around Ben Thanh market appeared to look the colour of red as thousands held and waved the Vietnamese flag with shouts of ‘Vietnam champions!’

Along 3/2, Cach Mang Thang 8 and Ly Thai To streets vendor opened shop to sell the national flag and banners. It was a lucrative day for these vendors!

Traffic police were hard pressed to maintain law and order and prevent extreme frolicking.

Hanoi: a forest of flags in My Dinh stadium

Hanoi saw a similar jubilant atmosphere with My Dinh Square in front of the My Dinh National Stadium filling with thousands of fans carrying Vietnamese flags and banners. Crowds were unmindful of the warm temperatures of nearly 17 degrees C. Vendors made huge profits selling flags and banners around the stadium.

The streets around Hoan Kiem Lake were flooded with thousands of people holding flags, banners and flowers, shouting ‘Vietnam champion’ and ‘I love Calisto’!

Hoang Giang, a student from the University of Economics, said ‘it was a heart attack match for Vietnamese fans. Finally, the national squad won. Tan Truong, the goal keeper has become a hero in Vietnam. I love Calisto’.
