Over 2,000 students on September 19 partook in a campaign on traffic safety launched by Vietnam's National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC), the Ministry of Education and Training, the Department of Traffic Police under the Ministry of Public Security, Asia Injury Prevention Foundation and Honda Company.
The committee has lately liaised with the ministries, the foundation and the company to launch the Traffic Safety Month Campaign 2015 among students in Ho Chi Minh City and provinces in the South East Vietnam.
At the campaign-launching ceremony, Khuat Viet Hung deputy chairman of the NTSC, said that traffic accidents in the country is very complicated.
Traffic accidents leave bad consequences and most of victims of these accidents are young people and students.
At average, the country has over 11,000 traffic-related deaths annually causing damages of over VND17,000 billion (US$ 756.3 million). Drivers’ carelessness and low awareness of traffic regulation are the factors leading to traffic accidents.
Accordingly, Mr. Hung called for the education sector and local governments to increase information of the traffic regulations to raise awareness amongst students and people. Young people should realize that to obey traffic regulation means that they are protect themselves and others.
In response to the campaign, a representative from the Department of Education and Training in HCMC and representatives from provinces in South East Vietnam signed a pledge to increase education of traffic regulation in schools for the academic 2015-2016. In addition, the organizer gave 2,000 high quality helmets to poor students in HCMC with the message “ Wearing good helmets is one way to protect one’s life”
At the launching ceremony, thousands students with standard helmets drove motorcycles and electricity bikes along streets in the city to call for people’s awareness of traffic regulation.
At the same time, the campaign was also launched in the central province of Nghe An.
