The global economic-financial crisis and its corollary to Vietnam were the main topics of a training workshop for journalists in Ho Chi Minh City on August 24.
Almost 100 journalists of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and other press agencies in the city attended the event, which was jointly organised by VNA and the executive board of the EU-Vietnam Multilateral Trade Assistance Project (MUTRAP III).
Top local and foreign economists presented reports aiming to help the journalists update and systemize broader knowledge about the global economic and financial crisis as well as its impacts on Vietnam’s socio-economic development.
They put forth directions and solutions for Vietnam’s macro-economic development and shared experiences that major economies have taken to weather the crisis.
The experts pointed out high-quality human resource development as one of the urgent issues Vietnam needs to tackle in the post-crisis period.
Director of the Vietnam Institute for Economics Dr. Tran Dinh Thien said the government has quickly responded to the global economic downturn, effectively implementing the interest rate subsidy program and ensuring social security, thereby mitigating adverse impacts of the crisis on the local people.
Vietnam has seen signs of economic recovery, Thien said, suggesting that the country should restructure its economy based on human resources and high technology.
Deputy Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management Dr. Vo Tri Thanh, Industry and Trade Minister Assistant Nguyen Kim Son, MUTRAP III Chief Consultant Claudio Dordi, Rector of the Foreign Trade University Hoang Van Chau, and economist Pham Chi Lan also delivered speeches at the workshop.
