HCMC orients to lead in building smart city

With the orientation of leading in building a smart city, Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and the Ministry of Information and Communications have entered into an cooperation agreement to develop IT in the period of 2019-2020.

The cooperation agreement includes strengthening cyber security, developing IT infrastructure, IT industry, electronics and telecommunications, stepping up IT application, and building e-government and smart city, improving management on media as well.
Politburo member, Secretary of HCMC Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan stressed the cooperation will contribute in attaining the city’s socioeconomic goals particularly and the country generally.
HCMC is the country’s biggest economic hub with a large number of IT companies including Quang Trung Software Park, he added
Lately, HCMC has placed IT a major priority on the way to build smart city. Standing Board of the municipal Party Committee has also determined to achieve the goal of building smart city. HCMC is the first city in the country approved the smart city project.
“The two sides will attain benefits. The city will make breakthroughs in IT field with the assistance of the Ministry of Information and Communications in the next two years and vice versa, HCMC is a good destination where the Ministry can utilize advanced IT application as per its determination, said Mr. Nhan.
He added that the city is stepping up to gain development targets by 2020. Therefore, the cooperation program should also be specified with plans and directions to guarantee its effectiveness.
Chairman of the city People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong affirmed that the city will concentrate on developing electronic and IT which are the city’s key industries (including mechanism, plastic chemistry and food processing. The four major industries make up 70 percent of the industry products.
IT is not only a key industry but also one of nine key service sectors which contribute 60 percent of the city’s service product value. Especially, the city is implementing the IT development program connecting with building smart city.
Through the cooperation including six fields, the Ministry will help HCMC in developing IT Electronics to become one of four key industries as well as infrastructure so that the city will be soon successful in building smart city by 2025, said Mr. Phong.
On his part, Information and Communications Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that the agreement will help the two sides to achieve the goals assigned by the party and the government.
