HCMC ensures better lives for people in poverty

The Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee Le Thanh Hai said at a meeting to review the Poverty Alleviate Program on March 21 that the rate of poverty in HCMC has reduced.

More than 120,000 households exceed income of VND 12 million per person per year. The rate of households in poverty has decreased nearly 60 percent with 16,000 households. The city has finished the third phase of the program after two years of implementation.

The city has raised self-reliance for households in poverty, said Hai. The target for poverty rate is to decrease the rate to only 3 percent of the population.

Ward and district administrations should implement effective poverty alleviation models, said Hai. Fighting poverty should be sustainable and meet economic, social, and cultural development targets.

The municipal People’s Committee awarded certificates of merit to 11 districts that have been successful at eliminating poverty. Twenty-five individuals were also given awards for good accomplishments in lifting the community out of poverty.
