Le Thanh Hai, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the city People’s Committee and many city leaders attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, City chairman Quan bestowed high praise on the conservatory for its many achievements and contributions during the past 55 years.

He believed that the conservatory would continue to accomplish more and also provide an excellent faculty for teaching of theory of music, music composition and conducting.

Founded in 1956, the conservatory was earlier called “Saigon National Music and Drama School” covering three main fields: Vietnamese traditional music, European music and Vietnamese traditional dramatics.

The school was renamed Ho Chi Minh City National Music School in 1975 and later in 1981 as the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music.

It is one of the three conservatories in Vietnam besides the Hanoi Conservatory of Music and the Hue Conservatory.

The school provides faculty for teaching of music theory, music composition and conducting on Vietnamese Traditional Musical Instruments, the piano, string instruments, the clarinet and percussion and also teaches vocal singing and music techniques.
