City leaders are currently on high alert and supervising preventive measures in the coastal suburban district of Can Gio in Ho Chi Minh City, with the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center predicting an approaching storm with speed of 30 kph set to hit the southern provinces.
Le Thanh Liem, Deputy Chairman of the City People’s Committee, said some places in Can Gio District need evacuation. The Storm and Flood Prevention Steering Committee in the district has evacuated about 3,000 residents from the Thanh An island commune and some low-lying areas to safer shelters.
The People’s Committee of the district has also asked for all educational facilities to close down on November 6.
The City Storm and Flood Prevention Steering Committee and the Department of Transport have ordered owners of vessels, floating restaurants and hydrofoils to suspend all activities in wake of the coming storm.
Residents in low-lying districts such as in Districts 2, 7, 12, Thu Duc, Binh Thanh and Can Gio have been banned from using waterway transport until the storm has passed.
The Department of Education and Training in HCMC on November 6 asked all schools to shut down by 4pm until a new announcement. Many schools told parents to pick up their kids early to avoid the approaching storm.
Some airlines cancelled flights from and to the Cam Ranh International Airport in the central province of Khanh Hoa on November 6. State-owned national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines announced cancellation of 14 flights from and to Cam Ranh Airport as the Central Airport Authority disallowed flights to land in the airport from 11am on November 6 to 6pm on November 7 due to expected bad weather.
The low-cost flag carrier Vietjet Air also announced cancellation of six flights from and to Cam Ranh Airport and four flights from and to the highlands province of Buon Ma Thuot on November 6.
The airline said it will transfer passengers to other flights if weather conditions allow take off. Passengers will be reimbursed accordingly.
Both airlines plan to increase flights from and to Cam Ranh Airport on November 7 if weather conditions permit.
