Mr Sang visited Tan Thong Hoi Commune, Cu Chi Suburban District, and discussed implementing the new model of socialist rural areas.

Mr. Sang underlined that the culture architecture of rural areas is being sidelined for foreign style housing. To prevent a loss of identity, architectural plans need to suit to the environs of rural areas in Ho Chi Minh City.

The commune also needs to expand the model to other local communes and suburban districts in Ho Chi Minh City and then nationally, he added.

Along with urban growth, the model deals with preserving the architectural features of rural areas, he said.

Mr Sang said that the development of a social economy and clean industry needs to reduce to the disparity between rural and urban incomes.

The new model for rural areas needs to connect closely with the party committee at grassroots level, local authorities and be accepted by citizens.

Attending the working session, former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai said the new model has to improve living conditions, enrich cultural life and provide full infrastructure.

Local authorities also need to build traditional houses for heroic Vietnamese mothers to honor their good examples, Mr Khai added.

Tan Thong Hoi Commune covers 1,788 hectares, with a population of 30,000 citizens.

The total investment for the rural project is VND542 billion (US$34.4 million), with 64 percent coming from the State.
