A section of embankment along the Cau Lan canal in Thu Duc District in Ho Chi Minh City was breached due to surging high tide floodwaters from the Saigon River, inundating many households on December 4.
Floodwaters rose rapidly and submerged many areas of Binh Chanh District under one meter of water.
Water flowed into residential areas causing damage to property and personal belongings.
People had to stay at home to clean up and children were stopped from going to school.
Meantime, hundreds of vehicles broke down on roads. Floodwaters overflowed ponds and fish escaped. Residents tried to catch as many fish as they could.
After the incident, local authorities and residents deployed cajeput trees and sandbags to fortify the dyke as well as pumped out floodwaters from residential areas. The water level dropped slightly on December 5.
Luong Dinh Cua, Tran Nao Streets in District 2, Kha Van Can Street in Thu Duc District, Le Van Luong, Nguyen Binh Streets in Nha Be District, Hoa Binh Street in District 11, Huynh Tan Phat Street in District 7, and Phu Dinh Quay in District 8, were all submerged under floodwaters.
