Police in the central province of Quang Tri have concluded that three babies died at Huong Hoa General Hospital on March 27 last year because a nurse mistakenly injected them with a muscle relaxant instead of a hepatitis B vaccine.

Nguyen Thi Thuan gave them Esmeron, which is used to relax muscles during surgery and other procedures, which had been placed in a refrigerator meant exclusively for hepatitis B vaccines by Dr Le Truong Son.

The three children died just 10 minutes after being injected.

The police have prosecuted the people involved for “accidentally causing human death due to a breach of professional or administrative regulations.”

At a press conference, they said they are still investigating to find out the exact responsibility of each individual.

In related news, Dr Hong Quoc Thich, head of the maternity department at the Can Tho General Hospital in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, and Dr Le Thi Thu Van, chief surgeon, have been given a warning for removing the ovaries of Le Thi Anh Phuong, 41, of Soc Trang Province who had been diagnosed with appendicitis.

The surgery was done on May 6.
