This is a very dangerous and highly infectious disease since the natural location of Neisseria meningitis is inside humans. Therefore, the main source of disease is meningitis patients and healthy people carrying the bacteria.
According to Mr. Do Van Dong, Deputy Director of the Drug Administration of Vietnam, two imported vaccine for meningitis disease have been registered to be used in Vietnam, which are Polysaccharide Meningococcal A+C (made in France; registered number in Vietnam is QLVX-992-17) and VA-Mengoc-BC (made in Cuba; registered number is QLVX-H02-985-16).
However, as noticed by the representative of Sanofi Pasteur, the producer of vaccine for meningitis disease types A and C (Polysaccharide Meningococcal A+C) has stopped its supply globalwide.
The world is now using the vaccine for meningitis disease types A, C, Y and W-135, yet this kind of vaccine is in very low supply in Vietnam.
The representative of the Drug Administration of Vietnam quoted a report by importing companies that 125,000 doses of VA-Mengoc-BC vaccine had come to Vietnam, 49,000 of which had successfully passed the examination of the National Institute for Control of Vaccine and Biologicals.
These are now available for use when needed, he added.
It is supposed that in the end of May, 100,000 more doses of vaccine for meningitis disease will enter Vietnam, bringing the total imported vaccine in 2018 to 800,000 doses, nearly the same as the imported ones in 2017.
