Dr Nguyen Manh Hung, director of National Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology, April 25 said that this year the Government plans to reduce the number of malaria cases and deaths, as well as prevent the spread of disease.

According to the latest Ministry of Health survey, there were 12,548 cases of malaria and one death since the beginning of the year, down 25.3 percent over the same period last year.

Drug-resistant malarial parasites have spread to many provinces, said Dr Hung, adding that the WHO also warned about this on World Malaria Awareness Day on April 25.

The WHO said that this disease may spread widely in the Mekong Delta, with drug resistance preventing efforts to eradicate malaria by 2015.
