A three-year-old Vietnamese boy has died from avian influenza after undergoing treatment for one week at the Children Hospital II in Ho Chi Minh City, according to hospital officials.
The young victim, from the southern province of Binh Duong, was admitted to hospital in critical condition last week with severe damage to his lungs and respiratory failure.
Tests showed he was infected with the H5N1 virus. Despite doctors’ efforts, the child did not respond to drug treatments and the damage to his lungs was severe.
His death has taken the national bird flu toll to two after a 38-year-old woman from southern Tien Giang Province succumbed to the illness in February.
