The Food Hygiene and Safety Department under the Ministry of Health said that sterilized Hi-P chocolate dairy milk and powdered Whole Milk2 produced by the Ha Noi Milk Joint Stock Company (Hanoimilk) has been found contaminated with melamine.

The chocolate milk contained 150 mcg of melamine per kg and the whole milk powder had 245 mcg per kg.

As of Friday evening, 20 milk and milk-based products on the market have been found to be contaminated with melamine, two more than the 18 contaminated announced one day earlier.

Four diary products of Hanoimilk have been found to contain melamine.

The Ministry of Health urged milk producers to recall and destroy all tainted products. It would tighten control over production and trade of milk and dairy-based products on the market, the ministry said.

Milk businesses that are found making incorrect announcements about the quality of their products will be subject to heavy penalties and have their business license revoked, said Dr. Nguyen Cong Khan, head of the Food Hygiene and Safety Department.

The Health Ministry on Friday set up 15 joint inspection teams which will carry out examinations at premises producing and trading in milk, dairy materials and milk-derived products across the country. Strict punishment will be handed out to those who violate regulations on food hygiene and safety.
