Second Death from Bird Flu

A 28-year-old Vietnamese woman died from bird flu on Thursday in the National Institute for Clinical Research of Tropical Diseases in Ha Noi.

Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga, head of the Department of Preventive Health, says the 28-year-old victim from the northern province of Ha Nam was admitted to hospital two weeks ago in a critical condition with severe damage to both lungs and respiratory failure.

Tests showed she was infected with the H5N1 virus. Despite 13 days of treatment, the damage to her lungs was still severe and the virus still present.

Her death comes 17 months after the previous one from avian influenza.

In related news, a six-year-old boy with dengue fever died at the Tropical Diseases Hospital on Wednesday.

Le Truong An was being taken to intensive care when he expired, according to the hospital’s Dr. Nguyen Thanh Dung.

To date, 1,600 infants, children and adults have been hospitalized with dengue fever in Viet Nam, every one of them in a critical condition.
