Over 3,500 people have registered to donate their organs across the country, said director of the National Center for Coordinating Human Organ Transplants Trinh Hong Son at a scientific seminar on human transplant  on January 12 in Hanoi.

Over 3,500 people have registered to donate their organs across the country, said director of the National Center for Coordinating Human Organ Transplants Trinh Hong Son at a scientific seminar on human transplant  on January 12 in Hanoi.

As of December 31, 2015, around 3,542 people sent their letters to the Hanoi-based center and Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray Hospital to donate their organs. Noteworthy, over 76 percent of organ donors are people in the age of 18 to 27 and male make up a rate of 57.9 percent.

Dr. Son said that in addition to alive organ donors, a large quantity of brain-dead people is most suitable for organ transplant.

He added that the country has 16 hospitals that can undertake organ transplant including kidney, liver, heart, and kidney-pancreas. Vietnamese surgeons have  so far conducted 1,116 kidney transplants, 48 liver transplants, 13 heart transplants, 1 kidney-pancreas transplant and heart-lung transplant.

The demand of organ transplant is very   high yet there is a scarcity of organ donation. By statistic, there are 4,000-5,000 people in the country in need  of liver transplants; around 6,000 people are waiting for kidney transplant operation and around 2,000 people in need of cornea transplant.

Moreover, Dr. Son said that Vietnam is not ready for head transplant yet it prepares personnel for the transplant.

Vietnam will invite surgeons of the first case of head transplant in the world to the country if the first head transplant is successful, he added.
