One woman dies of A//H1N1 virus

The Ho Chi Minh City Preventive Medicine Center June 8 said that a woman in Thu Duc District died of A/H1N1 on May 30 after five –day self-treatment at home. Test results showed that she is positive for A/H1N1.

Right after receiving the information of the woman, the center in coordination with Pasteur Institute to run epidemiological investigation as well as adopt measures to curb the spread of infections in medical facilities and in the community.

Head of the Anti-Poison Department of Cho Ray Hospital Le Quoc Hung June 8 also affirmed to provide treatment on a man infected with A/H1N1 virus. The man was in critical condition.

The man hailing from the central province of Binh Thuan was taken to Thu Duc District on June 5 when he was suffering breathing problem and severe pneumonia. Test results showed that he was infected with A/H1N1 virus. He was isolated for treatment because his condition was so critical.

According to his relative, he is a driver. A few days ago, he was transporting a bus carrying many tourist including a person with flu to the central city of Da Nang. After the tour, he was experiencing a high fever, muscle pain; therefore, he was taken to the General Hospital in Binh Thuan.

However, despite medical workers’ efforts to save him, his illness did not abate. He had serious breathing problem; hence, the family transferred him to medical facility in Thu Duc where he developed cough, pneumonia and respiratory problem.

Worse, the man has diabetes; accordingly, he was put on ventilator and transferred to Cho Ray hospital where confirmed he was infected with the flu virus after testing. He was isolated to curb the spread.

Doctors said his condition was not improved at all after three-day treatment.

Initially, both cases developed in fatty people who have diabetes also.

After eight days of supervision, no case was detected in the woman’s neighborhood and in the hospital provided treatment. Pasteur institute also closely keeps an eye on the man transferred from Binh Thuan province.

The Preventive Medicine Center and Pasteur Institute liaised with hospital to adopt preventative measures in medical facilities as well as increase information of the disease in the community where both patients live.

Pasteur institute in HCMC warned dwellers especially vulnerable people including kids, senior people, pregnant women, obese people and those with chronic illnesses to take vaccine , keep good personal hygiene and limit contact with sick people. Once experiencing flu symptoms such as high fever, cough, sneezing, people should go to nearby medical clinics for treatment.
