The man hailing from the central highlands province of Gia Lai was scratched by the family’s dog one month ago, said his relative.  Because of small scratch without having infection, the man was neglected  without having a vaccination against rabies.

However, in the middle of June, he developed symptoms including agitation and excess salivation; therefore, he was rushed to the General Hospital in Gia Lai where doctors diagnosed that he was in critical condition. He was accordingly transferred to the Tropical Disease Hospital in HCMC.

Medical workers of the Tropical Disease Hospital were quick to put him on ventilator and used drug to help heart beat to increase his low blood pressure. Additionally, he was taken medicine to fight against convulsion fits. Along with this, medical workers filtered his blood continuously.

Currently, he was taken sleeping tablets to restore damaged organs. After one or two weeks, doctors will re-check his condition.

Deputy head of the intensive care unit Duong Bich Thuy said that before, most human rabies cases died. Yet, lately, 10 cases were rescued thanks to new treatment in the world.

Accordingly, since May, 2017, the hospital applied the new treatment which helped rabies patients to live over 21 days. Doctors hope in next time, the new treatment will help save rabies patients.
