Liver transplant performed to save 15 year old girl

Viet-Duc Hospital in Hanoi yesterday said that it had successfully carried out a liver transplant to save a 15 year old girl.

The girl from the northern province of Thanh Hoa who were in critical condition. The donor is her father.

Hospital director Professor Tran Binh Giang said that the girl suffered Wilson disease, an inborn error of copper metabolism caused by a mutation to the copper-transporting gene leading to cirrhosis.

In February, she experienced gastrointestinal bleeding and hepatic coma. Therfore,  she was taken to the National Children Hospital in early March when she had blood coagulation problem and blood infection; despite of treatment, her condition did not abate. She was thought to die without transplant.

Through test, her father’s liver is suitable to her body. More than 100 medical workers were mobilized for the surgery on March 29. Surgeons took 60 percent of the father’s liver for transplant in 10 hours.

Four days after, the girl recovered and she can eat slight meal. Her father is stable too and will be discharged this week.
