The center for preventive medicine in district 12 has provided training to medical workers who worked in schools and medical clinics in wards.
Health officials have also carried out epidemiology investigation and treat the outbreaks in Le Van Tho and Pham Van Chieu Primary Schools as well as sprayed disinfectants and increased information of the disease to parents in a bid to curb the spreading.
Dr. Vu Duc Dien from the local center of preventive medicine stressed that mumps is an acute infectious viral disease caused by the mumps virus.
It is highly contagious and spreads rapidly among people living in close quarters and the virus is transmitted by respiratory droplets or direct contact with an infected person who sneezes or cough, he said.
Mumps can occasionally cause complications, especially in adults. Complications include inflammation of the testicles (orchitis) in males who have reached puberty rarely does this lead to fertility problems; inflammation of the brain (encephalitis); inflammation of the tissue covering the brain and spinal cord (meningitis); inflammation of the ovaries (oophoritis) and/or breast tissue (mastitis) and deafness.
The disease will spread in crowded areas such as schools and dormitories; accordingly people should keep their personal hygiene and tidy houses especially limit contact with ill persons or wear mask when contacting sick people, he said.
The best way to prevent the disease is immunization and sick people should stay at home to relax and not spread the disease into the community, he added.
