Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City have successfully carried out two liver transplants whose donors are alive, said the hospital yesterday
The first surgery was conducted on a 60-year-old man from the Mekong delta province of Ben Tre who suffered from liver cancer, hepatitis and serious cirrhosis. The donor is his 32 year old son.
Surgeons performed the second operation on a 66 year old woman in HCMC who has cirrhosis in the last stage, hepatitis and liver cancer. Her oldest son, who is 37 years old, agreed to donate his liver.
Pham Huu Thien Chi, deputy head of the liver, gall bladder and pancreas ward at the hospital, said the surgeries are difficult as donors are alive yet both are successful. Both the patients and the donors are in stable condition and recovering from the surgery. Doctor Chi said each surgery last more than 10 hours.
The hospital has conducted six liver transplants since 2012, including five whose donors are alive and one whose donor is dead.
