First surrogate twins successfully delivered

The twins, who are two boys; one weighing 2.1kg and the other weighing 1.9kg, arrive at Tu Du Maternity Hospital. They are in good condition and taken care of in special division because they were born prematurely at 35 weeks of the pregnancy.

The 37 year old surrogate mother is the cousin of the twins’ biological mother. Their biological mother hailing from the south-central province of Khanh Hoa, who had got married for 5 years yet she could not be pregnant because sh has neither a cervix nor menstruation although her ovary is functional; subsequently, she had asked a cousin of her husband’s to bear the babies.

Her registration document for surrogacy is legalized, so Tu Du Maternity Hospital admitted. This case is the second surrogacy across the country after the first surrogate baby in Vietnam was born on January 22, 2016 at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Hanoi.

Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai, head of the infirmary’s Division for Planning and Assortment, said that as per Tu Du Hospital’s records, since July 2015, the hospital has received 33 registrations for surrogacy, 20 of which were approved by the medical council. Of 11 cases had been done, 6 of them are successful.
