Family doctor model should be multiplied: Health Minister

Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said at a meeting that the result of family doctor project is very encouraging, helping reduce overcrowding in big hospitals and it has raised public concern; accordingly this model should be multiplied.

Vietnam Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien  presided a meeting to review the family doctor project on August 4 in Medicine University in Ho Chi Minh City.

The meeting also discussed the project for the next period from 2016 to  2020.

The family doctor project for the period 2013 to 2020 was run as per the government’s decision. It aims to provide basic and continuous healthcare to each individual and family.

In the Southeast Asian country, in 1998, the project funded by China Medical Board of New York was given the green light by the Ministry of Health.

In Vietnam, the Ministry issued a decree on May 22, 2014 to guideline the activities and the project has been implemented. There have been 6 over 8 medical facilities run the project in district and achieved good results such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Thua Thien – Hue.

From 2013 to June, 2014, doctors under the project have examined 353,000 patients and gave emergency treatment to 2,743 patients. Family doctors also visited people’s house for treatment provision to 2,391 people as well as  consultation.

Attended the meeting were representative from government, directors of departments of health in 17 provinces and leading medical workers.
