HA NOI (VNS)— A 52-year-old man in the southern province of Binh Phuoc died on Saturday after seven days in the hospital with symptoms linked to avian influenza type A/H5N1.

This was the first A/H5N1 case recorded in the country in nine months, according to the Health Ministry's Preventive Medicine Department.

The patient was hospitalised on January 11 with flu-like symptoms including fever, coughing and breathing difficulties after his family ate duck meat. All samples taken from him tested positive for A/H5N1 flu.

The department instructed the provincial health department to increase measures to prevent the epidemic from spreading and advised the locals to follow precautionary measures like washing hands with soap and wearing gloves and masks if touching sick or dead fowl.
