Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee in Ho Chi Minh City, on May 17 dropped by Tam Duc Heart Institute to meet a worker who is preparing to undergo a heart operation that has been funded by a heart surgery program launched by the HCMC Labor Union.

Worker Nguyen Thi Kim Thanh works at the Korean May Hansae Company in Tay Bac Industrial Park in Cu Chi District. She lives there in a rented house in Tan Thong Hoi Commune of Cu Chi District with her daughter.

The Labor Union selected her for a free heart operation because of her poverty and disadvantaged condition. Whereas the union will provide VND55 million (US$2,625) towards her surgery, her colleagues in the company have contributed a further VND13 million.

Nguyen Thi Thu Ha lauded the humanitarian program of the Labor Union and expressed expectation that enterprises, benefactors and medical facilities would coordinate to nurture and multiply this humanitarian effort.

The union should continue such a program to help poor workers and lend support to their families. So far, the program has spent VND1.3 billion for surgeries for 16 workers with heart diseases.
