Ceftriaxon Causes Two Fatalities in Tay Ninh Province

As of November 8, all hospitals and clinics in Tay Ninh Province have stopped using Korean-made Ceftriaxon, “a broad-spectrum antibiotic with a long half-life and high penetrability to meninges, eyes and inner ears”, after two recipients of the serum died.

Other hospitals’ policies in light of these deaths have apparently gone unreported.
 
November 7 at the Tay Ninh General Hospital: After receiving Ceftriaxon produced by South Korea’s Myungmoon Pharm Co. Ltd. (Expiry date: July 10, 2009), mother-to-be Chau Thi My Hien, 29, of Chom Dua Hamlet, Dong Khoi Commune, Chau Thanh District, Tay Ninh, apparently just died.
 
In another incident, Le Hung Tao, 21, was to have his appendix out at the Duong Minh Chau District General Hospital.

After being injected with Ceftriaxon to prevent infections, he went into shock, his blood pressure went off the charts and a few hours later he too was dead.
 
The Ceftriaxon administered to Tao was made by South Korea’s LG-Life Sciences Ltd (Expiry date: March 25, 2010).
