A pregnant woman in the southern province of Soc Trang has died after contracting the bird flu virus, the second death out of the virus in Vietnam so far this year.

Son Thi Sa Vuol, resident in the province’s Thanh Tri District, died on Jan. 28. Doctors at the Bac Lieu Province General Hospital had conducted an operation to take the child out of her body before her death. She was pregnant for 36 weeks.

At present, the newborn is under special treatment at the hospital.

Her husband’s mother is also under special treatment at the hospital because she got a fever with high temperatures and coughing.

Their samples have been sent to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City for tests.

According to the Health Ministry’s Department of Preventive Medicine, epidemic inspections showed that the dead pregnant woman had killed and eaten sick chickens, and that chickens had been found dead around her home earlier.

Soc Trang officials have asked her neighbors to cull down their fowls, and given bird flu medicine Tamiflu to those who had contacted her.
