Dr. Phu said approximately 700,000 people in the world died of antibiotic resistance annually, and it is forecast that the number will rise to around 10 million by 2050 due to antibiotic-resistant infection
Worse, Vietnam is listed among countries with the high rate of antibiotic-resistance infections.
Uncontrollable use of antibiotic not only increases resistance amongst the community but also results in bad consequences.
For instance, Dr. Phu reminded the outbreak of measles in 2014-2015. At first, the outbreak was thought to be caused by strain mutation but later thorough researches have shown that outbreak is caused by cross-infection in hospitals. Many inpatients suffer antibiotic resistance which made difficulties in treating.
He pointed out antibiotic resistance is becoming an insolvable medical problem resulting in longer stay in hospital and even death of many inpatients who are suffering antibiotic resistance.
Meanwhile measures against antibiotic resistance in Vietnam are just conduted in public medical institutions. Increasing people’s awareness of using biotic and setting up a supervision network and full data of antibiotic are what need to do urgently.
