Degenerative disc disease is a spinal condition caused by the breakdown of your intervertebral discs. As you age, your spine begins to show signs of wear and tear as your discs dry out and shrink.

According to scientists’ study, 6 out of every 10 Vietnamese people who are over 40 year old suffer degenerative disc disease. Scientists have measured 20 vertebras of 600 male and female people  over 40 year old.

Test results showed that 60 percent of them have degenerative disc disease and more women suffer the disease than men. The rate of women having degenerative disc disease is 62 percent while it is just 55 percent in men.

This is the first large-scale scientific research has been conducted in Vietnam and it is published in the world leading science magazine Calcifield Tissue International

Dr. Ho Pham Thuc Lan, leader of the science group and author of the publication said that in the EU, 8 out of 10 people who are over 60 year old have the disease. All of them don’t know they have the disease as they don’t have symptoms.

In reality, pain in back is one of symptoms of degenerative disc disease. As per the study, 44 percent people have painful back and nearly 30 percent have pain in neck. Overweight and old age are two main factors leading to the degenerative disc disease.
