31 percent of people in the city aged from 30 to 69 have prediabetes, said healthcare experts of the Nutrition Center at a meeting to mark the International Diabetes Day held in Ho Chi Minh City on November 14.

Studies that the center conducted on the group of adults aged from 30 to 69 in the city shows the rate of diabetes people is 11.5 percent and prediabetes people is 31 percent. Currently, the proportion of people with diabetes in the country accounts for 5 percent of the whole population and prediabetes rate is 27 percent.
 
Prediabetic people will develop type 2 diabetes if they don’t make some lifestyle changes. Worse, 65 percent of them do not know to have the risk of the disease and 56.3 percent of patients who were diagnosed to have the disease yet they have not been cured.

Accordingly, of 10 diabetes cases, 6 of them will have dangerous complications and they are at risk of death twice of those who do not have diabetes. At present, 150 people die of diabetes-related diseases in the country every year.
