Doctors in Ho Chi Minh City saved the life of 10-month-old girl child Le Anh Minh Khue by performing a liver transplant yesterday.
The child from Dong Nai Province suffered from liver failure, and doctors at Children Hospital 2 removed the organ and replaced it with 270 grams of liver donated by her mother in a 10-hour surgery.
She is the youngest patient in the country to undergo a successful liver transplant.
The hospital’s Professor Tran Dong A said the patient had been diagnosed with congenital bilary atresia, a disease of the bile duct, and operated upon when just two and a half months old.
But it had not brought in the desired effect and doctors decided to do another surgery because it is a potentially fatal condition.
Two doctors and a nurse from Belgium assisted with the surgery.
The hospital has, in the past, performed liver transplants on many children aged below two, all of whom are now doing well.
