A gold medal from the International Physics Olympic Contest was given to Nguyen Minh Hoang, twelfth grader from Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in the northern province of Nghe An.

Hoang had previously won a bronze medal from the Asia Physics Olympic 2011.

Nguyen Dinh Hoi and Le Hoang Phuong, twelfth graders from Phan Boi Chau School and Le Quy Don School for Gifted Students in Da Nang respectively, won two silver medals from the International Physics Contest.

The contest, which was organized in Thailand and attended by more than 400 students from 86 countries, also gave two bronze medals to 11th grader Le Huy Quang from Lam Son School for Gifted Students in the northern province of Thanh Hoa and 12th grader Dinh Huy Hong Quan from Ho Chi Minh City High School for the Gifted at Vietnam National University-HCMC.

Meanwhile, two silver medals from the International Chemistry Olympic Contest were won by Tran Thi Ngoc Quy, 12th grader from HCMC High School for the Gifted and Pham Dang Huy, 11th grader from Tran Phu School for Gifted Students in the northern town of Hai Phong.

Pham Minh Duc, 12th grader from Hanoi-Amsterdam School for Gifted Students and Vo Duy Viet, 12th grader from Le Quy Don School for Gifted Students in the south central province of Binh Dinh each won a bronze medal from the chemistry contest.

At the International Biology Olympic contest organized in Taiwan, three bronze medal were given to Truong Thi Phuong Thao, 12th grader from Le Quy Don High School in Da Nang, Nguyen Truong Kien, 12th grader from the High School for Gifted Students under Hanoi Education University, and Nguyen Thu Trang, 11th grader from Le Hong Phong High School for Gifted Students in the northern province of Nam Dinh.

Dang Thu Trang from Nam Dinh’s Le Hong Phong School, the fourth and last member of the team, also won a certificate of merit, which values below the bronze medal.

Last year Vietnam achieved two gold medals in five subjects.

The International Student Olympic Contests are organized every year for high school students worldwide.

According to the ministry’s figures released last year, Vietnam’s performance at international Olympiad competitions has gotten worse, while other regional countries are showing progress.

In 1999, three-fourths of Vietnam’s computer skills team won gold medals but over the past eight years the team hasn’t won a single gold medal.

Vietnam didn’t fare any better in math, the ministry said.

In 2000 the country’s team ranked fifth at the Mathematics Olympiads. In 2010, if fell to tenth place, while Thailand jumped from 29th to fifth in the same period.

Vietnam will host the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad for high school students in 2014 for the first time.
