The International Physics Olympiad, held from July 21 to July 29 and hosted by Viet Nam, held its closing ceremony at National Conference Center in My Dinh National Stadium of Ha Noi. Viet Nam ranked second place and received four gold medals.
The ceremony welcomes some special guests, including Mrs. Nguyen Thi Doan, deputy chairwoman of the party’s Central Committee, Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, deputy Prime Minister and Minister of education, and Prof. Matja Ahtee, acting president of International Physics Olympiad.
Nguyen Duc Minh of Ha Noi - Amsterdam High School; Do Hoang Anh of the Natural Science University of Ha Noi National University; Huynh Minh Toan of Le Quy Don High School in Da Nang; and Nguyen Tat Nghia of Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School in Nghe An received gold medals. The bronze medal went to Tran Anh Vu of Dao Duy Tu High School in Ha Noi.
This is the best result Viet Nam has obtained at an international physics competition since 1982, said Mr. Banh Tien Long, deputy minister of education and training.
Mr. Ahtee highly praised the intelligence of Vietnamese pupils and expected that the pupils would still follow their interest in physics during their lives.
Mr. Nhan also spoke highly of the efforts of Vietnamese pupils in the contest. He hoped that the pupils would use their knowledge to support the development of the country.
International Physics Olympiad is an annual competition for secondary school students. The first Olympiad was held in Warsaw, Poland in 1967.
