The People’s Committee in the highland province of Kon Tum held a meeting on November 21 to review five years of implementation of a credit study program for poor students.

At the meeting it was reported that during the period 2007-2012, 6,783 disadvantaged households in the province and beneficiaries of social policies had asked for loans of upto VND125 billion (US$6 million).

Currently, 8,420 students will be provided VND121 billion ($5.8 million) from the credit study program for their education. Most of the students and their parents are very well aware of their debt and give back on due date.

However, some students remain unemployed after graduation while their families continue to be on the poverty line, which then leads to extending their debt payment deadline.
