Junior high students eager to learn Metro

Over 40 eighth-graders of Tran Van On Junior High School in district 1 were excited to attend a class as per STEM education, which aims to educate students in four specific disciplines – science, technology, engineering and mathematics on May 9.

The students will find out information and structure of the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro, the first of its kind in Vietnam, said the railway management board. Of the length of the metro, from Saigon Opera House station to Ba Son station comprises two underground stations and 781 underground rails while the rest will be in the ground.
The metro construction started in December, 2017, 65 percent of work volume has been done and it is scheduled that four rails will be operated in the end of 2019.
Head of the Physics Department teacher Truong Quy Lam said the class aims to help students review their knowledge of pressure, inclined plane in physics or population density, ground in geography to handle problems in life.
The participant students were divided into three groups to find out tunnel boring machine (TBM), a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of soil and rock strata, railway development plan, technique and structuring matters.
According to the lesson plan, the students will spend two weeks finding out information in internet and documents, and then they will have a chance to see and hear experts and managers’ answers.
Eight-grader Nguyen Huu Gia Hung said that he used to take subway in Singapore and Thailand; therefore, he was excited to understand more about the construction and information of the railway in Vietnam.
He put series of questions for experts like how to increase the rails’ speed, how to install poison gas system to protect laborers and visitors, and how to fix small faults.
Meantime, student Dinh Le Minh Tri who had a trip to Japan where railway has automatic seats to receive more passengers seats in rush hours expected people will support the railway project in Vietnam.
Especially, 20 students will continue exchange information of metro construction and people’ awareness of using the public transport mean with their Singaporean and Malaysian peers.
After the sightseeing tour of the metro, students will deliver speeches to their friends in school to share knowledge and experience.
This extra-activity is a big effort of teachers of Tran Van On Junior High School to help students get familiar with new studying method and then apply in life.
