Education Ministry asks publisher to withdraw book on practicing life skills

Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training Âugust 26 sent  document to the Vietnam Education Publishing House, asking to remove a book on practicing life skills intended for first grade children from shelves.

One of the courage lessons in the book "Walking on glass is a living skill" which advises kids to walk on broken glasses as an example of brave. The ‘courage lesson’ is accompanied by a photo showing a child actually walking on broken glasses with her bare feet.

The book was first published in 2014. It was republished this year by the same publishing house yet the glass walking lesson was removed.

The Ministry also asked the publisher to verify responsibility of individuals and the team who edited the book. The publishing house must review all publishing process to ensure the close connection to prevent errors in editing and publishing work.

The publishing house was ordered to send its report to the Ministry before September 5.

Following the Ministry's request, the publishing house sent its documents to its sub-departments, asking to remove all version of the book on practicing life skillspublished in 2014 from shelves.

Not only books practicing life skills intended for first grade children with the shocking courage lesson but books on practicing life skills for second and fifth grades will be removed from book store's shelves.

The publishing house ordered all book stores across the country to collect all books in inventory to send back to the publishing house. These stores will report the number of books in inventory to the publishing house before August 31.
