Vietnamese Photographer Wins Nikon’s Grand Prize

The photo “Crossing Waves” by photographer Le Tung Khanh from Ho Chi Minh City won the Grand Prize in the Nikon International Photo Contest 2006-2007.

The 31st International Photo Contest themed "At the Heart of the Image” – with two categories, "Free subject" and "Smile, Smile, Smile!" – was launched by the Nikon Corporation from September 1 to November 30, 2006.

The contest attracted more than 47,000 pictures by 16,000 photographers from 135 countries and regions. The greatest in number of entries from individual countries came from the U.S., Italy and China.

The First Prize in the Free Subject category went to “Breaking the Silence” by Portuguese artist Joao Quaresma; and the First Prize in “Smile, Smile, Smile” went to “Nothing to Laugh” by German photographer Hanne Lena Malat. “Old Friend” by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Son, a Vietnamese photographer, won the second prize in the Smile category.

The event is regarded as one of the world's largest and most prestigious photo contests, held since 1969 and currently staged once every other year. The contest is an opportunity for photographers around the world to communicate and enrich photographic culture for professionals and amateurs alike.

In addition, exhibitions of the winning photographs are scheduled for October 2-15 at Tokyo’s Shinjuku Nikon Salon and on 18-23 at Osaka’s Nikon Salon.
