Coffee continued to be the largest earner with export value exceeding US$ 91.7 million, up three percent year on year. Exports of rice jumped 145 percent during the period to exceed US$ 13.3 million.
Meanwhile, shipments of mobile phones and parts declined eight percent to about US$ 58.77 million.
Despite the growth, Vietnam’s exports to the North Africa nation will be unlikely to reach the target of US$ 300 million this year, said Vietnamese Trade Counsellor Hoang Duc Nhuan.
This was largely due to recent tighter Algerian import policies. Vietnam only exported US$ 13 million worth of commodities to Algeria in September, a significant decrease from previous months. Notably, mobile phones and parts saw dramatic falls in June and July and reported no orders in the next two months, he noted.
Nhuan said that the Trade Office of Vietnam is working with authorities in Algeria to help Vietnamese exporters resolve difficulties and boost exports in the final quarter of the year.
Vietnam’s shipments to Algeria were estimated at US$ 271.42 million in 2016, a year-on-year increase of 37 percent with most of the revenue coming from coffee and rice.
