Gold fluctuates around VND32.9 million

The price of gold in Vietnam surged by VND50,000 a tael (1.2 ounces) over the previous day to trade around VND32.9 million a tael. While global prices were almost unchanged as the greenback was steady ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s meeting.

Gold was bought at VND32.9 million and sold at VND32.95 million as of 9:30 am local time.

Sacombank Jewelry Company purchased gold at VND32.9 million and sold at VND32.94 million.

Hanoi-based Phu Quy Jewelry bought SJC-brand gold of Saigon Jewelry Company at VND32.87 and sold at VND32.95 million.

According to gold traders, VND33-million mark remained an important psychological resistance. Trading on bullion market turned muted as investors were waiting for global prices to show its tendency.

Meanwhile, small investors continued to buy gold as the precious metal remained a high-yielding channel versus other investment channels. Domestically, gold has gained 24 percent this year.

Dollars were bought at VND20,150 and sold at VND20,190, an increase of VND20-30 per dollar, on free market in Hanoi.

Internationally, gold for immediate delivery closed at $1,341.3 an ounce on the Comex in New York, same as the closing price of the previous trading session. Earlier, the metal retreated to $1,327 an ounce due to the greenback’s steadiness.

In Asia, the precious metal slid $1 an ounce to $1,340 an ounce as of 9:30 Vietnamese time.

The US dollar exchange rate was stable against other major currencies as investors became wary ahead of the Fed’s meeting on November 2 and 3. Despite speculation that Fed would announce quantitative easing, investors doubted that the scale of this new round would not be so large.

The euro exchange rate against the US dollar fell to $1.38 in Tokyo this morning from $1.39 the previous day.

Holdings at SPDR Gold Trust stayed unchanged at 1,298.3 metric tons for two days.

Crude oil futures for December settlement rose as much as $0.03 a barrel to close at $82.55 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

This morning, crude oil slid to around $82.2-82.3 a barrel.
