Former BIDV Chairman Tran Bac Ha dies in detention

Tran Bac Ha, former chairman of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), died before being taken to the 105 Military Hospital this morning, Colonel Do Quang Mao confirmed.

The hospital has transferred the body of the former powerful banker to a funeral house , said Colonel Mao.
The former chairman was being detained on charges of banking misconduct in BIDV.
In late June 2018, the Party’s Central Inspection Commission decided to expel Ha from the Communist Party of Vietnam for making many grave mistakes.
According to the Party’s Central Inspection Commission, Ha had to assume responsibility for the wrongdoings of the Party cell at BIDV in the 2010-15 and 2015-20 tenure, including his approval for the huge loan of VND4,700 billion ($210.7 million) to 12 ghost companies in a scandal relating to the now-defunct Vietnam Construction Bank (VNCB).
In the end January, 2018, during a trial regarding violations committed by Pham Cong Danh and accomplice , Ha was summoned as a witness and a person with related interests and obligations but he did not attend the trial, and his lawyer said he was being treated for cancer.
