The Department of Plant Protection under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced that Vietnamese dragon fruits will be allowed to export to Taiwanese market from June 1 after nearly eight years of interruption.
This result was achieved thanks to efforts of the department during several negotiations to remove technical barriers on plant quarantine between the department and its Taiwanese counterpart, the Bureau of Animal and Plant Inspection and Quarantine.
Accordingly, Taiwan requires the fruit to be sterilized with hot stream in order to ensure that fruit flies are all killed before being exported. Taiwanese experts will tour to Vietnam and coordinate with the country's plant quarantine experts to supervise the sterilization process.
