Economic forum discusses ways to develop Mekong Delta

The 2016 Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation (MDEC) Forum was officially opened at Vi Thanh city of Hau Giang province on July 11.

Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Steering Committee for southwestern region Mr. Vuong Dinh Hue presided over the forum which also welcomed leaders of departments of the Government and local people committees, domestic and foreign businessmen, investors, ambassadors and international organizations.

Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue said that the Mekong Delta is one of richest agricultural regions in the Southeast Asia and it ranks the first position in Vietnam with 50 percent of rice output, 65 percent of aquaculture output, 70 percent of fresh fruit.

It contributes 95 percent of rice export value and 65 percent of fishery export value of the country, he added.

However, Mekong Delta provinces have suffered annually damages and difficulties on agricultural, forestry and aquatic production because of drought and saltwater influx impact.

On the same day, People’s Committee of Hau Giang province in collaboration with Steering Committee for the Southwestern region, Ministry of Trade and Industry and General Directorate of Tourism co- hosted the linking conference for development of Mekong Delta's tourism products and conference for Investment Promotion.

At present, banks and Vietnamese enterprises pledged to sponsor for building thousands of houses and schools in 13 provinces of the Mekong Delta.
