Construction of new seaport in Mekong Delta needs US$4.1 billion

Vietnam Maritime Administration on November 16 suggested that the Ministry of Transport would propose the Prime Minister to arrange budget funds for construction of Tran De Seaport in Soc Trang province.
At a meeting of the Ministry of Transport on November 16, it was said that Tran De seaport will be planned to be a special seaport of type IA, playing the role of an international gateway for export import goods in the Mekong Delta and coal transit for thermal power plants in the region.
The project is estimated to cost US$4.1 billion in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang.
Because of the large investment capital, the administration proposed to seek state budget financing some items including bridges, waterway and dykes under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Consultant firms said that the port area is expected to approximate 30,000 hectares stretching from Tran De to My Thanh estuaries.
Tran De Seaport will be built 15-20 kilometers offshore with the depth of ten 10 meters to avoid impacts from sand deposits. It will be connected with the mainland by bridges.
The port is expected to have the capacity of 150 million tons and receive vessels of 220,000 DWT.
